Pontypool Golf Club is a Private Members Club and has been established since 1903.
The Club is run on behalf of the members by a General Committee of 12 members who are advised by a Management Board of 3 and a Club Chairman who is in office for 4 years.
The Annual General Meeting of the club takes place on the 3rd Thursday of March each year, when the New Captain takes office. At this meeting the annual accounts are presented and 3 new committee places are contested. The Captain normally starts the Competition season with his Drive-In at 12 noon on the Saturday following the Annual General Meeting.
All decisions affecting members are decided by the General Committee and are also determined by the Club Constitution.
TEAM AND COMPETITION INFORMATION Pontypool Golf Club has 3 teams playing in the Gwent Golfing Union Leagues. These are teams of 5 players and play a matchplay format home and away. The Teams nonnally consist of single handicap players and the Team Captains are always looking for interested players.
WAYFARER The Wayfarer league is for players in the 9.5 to 18.4 Handicap range. The Team consists of 10 players and the matches are played Home & Away in pairs to a Greensome Foursome format. Interested players can contact the Wayfarer Secretary or Club Secretary and information is available on the Wayfarers Notice board in the Male Changing Room.
HALLETT SECTION The Hallett league is for players in the 18.5 to 28 Handicap range. The Team consists of 10 players and the matches are played Home & Away in pairs to a Foursome format. Interested players can contact the Hallett Secretary' or Club Secretary and information is available on the Hallett Notice board in the Male Changing Room.
SENIOR SECTION The Club has a Senior Section for members over 60 years of age. Seniors meet on Mondays and Thursdays at 12 noon and welcome new members to their section. They play various Cup competitions throughout the season including a Knock-out Cup. The Senior Section also play matches against other local clubs Home & Away. Teams consist of 10 players in a fourball better bail format and team selection dates are listed in the Senior Fixture Brochure.
LADIES SECTION The Ladies Section play their competitions normally on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season. The Ladies starting sheets are on display in the foyer for the information of male Members. This enables men to play at the times not booked by the ladies and ensures ladies have priority on the course on their competition days. The Ladies Section is very active in helping at all of the Club presentations and ensure the Clubhouse is decorated with flowers etc. on the important occasions.
JUNIOR SECTION The Junior Section is run by a Junior Committee who regularly arrange monthly medals on Sunday mornings. Other competitions are organized throughout the school holidays. o The section is always looking for volunteers to help on the mornings of competitions and throughout the season at the varied events organized for the juniors. The Juniors Section also has one team competing in the Gwent Junior League this consists of 5 players playing a matchplay format.
LOCKER ROOM NEWSLETTER The Club has started to produce a newsletter called "The Locker Room This will be published approximately every 3 months and will be available in the Clubhouse. Mr. Phil Jones the Editor would appreciate any news or interesting articles. The Secretary will also help with any queries from members concerning the newsletter.
COMPETITION DAYS The Men's Competitions are normally played on Saturdays. The starting sheet for these competitions is available on Tuesday evenings at 6.00pm in the Bar. Players may enter names for a starting time (3 names for singles competitions and 4 names for doubles competitions). The player entering names on the evening must be one of the entered players. After the Tuesday evening the competition sheet will be available in the Professional Shop until after the Competition ends. Please remember that times can still be booked if available even on Saturday competition day. Always telephone the Pro Shop to find available times on 01495 755544.
KNOCK OUT COMPETITONS There are numerous Club Knock Out competitions and entry sheets are posted in the male locker room at the start of the season. A draw takes place for places and each round must be played by a specific time. The names of the winners of the Knock Outs and other Club Competitions are added to the trophy boards in the Clubhouse and receive trophies at the annual presentation of prizes in November.
COCK-Y-NORTH ( Winter League) Each winter the annual Cock-Y-North competition is played. This consists of teams of 3 players with 2 playing each week in a league format. The winners and runners up represent the Club at the Annual County Finals. The winners and Runners up also receive trophies at the Annual Club Cock-y-North Dinner.
ETTIOUETTE As a new member etiquette both on the course and in the clubhouse is important Please remember the word "Ettiquette" means having consideration for others. The replacement of divots, the raking of bunkers and the repair of pitch marks on the greens is important to the continued condition of the course. The more we assist the green staff with these simple issues the better the condition of the course for our play.
PROFESSIONAL SHOP We have a Golf Shop run by Kyle Smith and his staff who will provide you with a friendly service. Kyle stocks a comprehensive range of golf equipment and will be only too pleased to quote for Clubs and fitting services and can order most items not in stock fairly quickly. Neil Matthews is our Head Professional and Golf Union of Wales National Coach. Neil is available for lessons on 07989 428584.
INDOOR TEACHING ACADEMY The Club has an Indoor Teaching Academy that is used for lessons by the Professional and is also available for members to practice indoors to improve their game. There is also a Tri-Golf indoor practice area that also has 3 bays to enable members to practice indoors in bad weather, or when they feel the need to perfect their swings.
PRACTICE FACILITIES There are excellent practice facilities at the Club that include: A practice ground with marked greens for all types and lengths of golf shot A putting green, for that important putting practice. An outdoor chipping area with bunkers for that short game practice. Two indoor practice rooms for use throughout the season as necessary.
SNOOKER ROOM The Club also has a snooker room with a Full Size table for members to use while using the Club House facilities.
WEB SITE INFORMATION The web site is updated regularly and details of winners of all competitions are available for members information. A very useful weather link can be found on the home page under weather forecast. This will take you to the Met Office Site where up to date information can be found for local weather. A must, for those regular all weather golfers amongst you. Details of Fixtures, Socials. Society Details, Function Room Hire, Bar Hours, Team Details, Section Details, Club History, Course Informatioa Open Weeks, Application Fonns and many more areas that will keep you informed of the things happening at the Club. Please feel free to pass ideas that could improve the web site to the Secretary.
BAR CARDS The Club operates a Bar Card system that allows members a discount off the published bar prices. Members have 20% added to the deposits placed on their bar cards which then gives them the discount on their purchases. If cards are lost then a replacement is available at £2 from the Secretary. The money left on the old card can be transferred to the new one. If bar cards are broken or fail to work then they will be replaced free of charge.
SOCIALS The Club organizes Social evenings normally on a monthly basis. These are advertised in the clubhouse and can consist of different types of entertainment from Discos, single artists, Duos and bands. Some of the evenings are Dinner Cabaret evenings when members can book tables of 10 and enjoy a 2 course meal and a cabaret artist. Members can invite guests to these evenings and it is recommended to book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available from the Bar and must be paid for when collected. There are Hog Roasts and Barbeques organized in the summer and the Social Sub Group led by the Captain would appreciate any suggestions from members to ensure that future Socials are what members want.
FUNCTION ROOM The Function Room will sit 100 people and caters for weddings, Private Parties and other Social Functions to members and non members. The Function Room can be booked in advance for all types of occasions with the Club Secretary.
CATERING The Steward and his wife are responsible for the catering and meals and snacks are available daily for members. Sunday Lunches are also available most Sundays when the fixture list allows and are excellent value. Please book in advance with the Steward.
