Stableford is another format used to score a golf competition

Each hole will be given points ranging from 0 to 5 points a hole

PAR for 18 holes is classed as 36 points

OVER PAR for 18 holes is classed as 35 and below

UNDER PAR for 18 holes is classed as 37 and above

Marking the Card

Before swapping cards with playing partners you need to

1 Add your name next to PLAYER A

2 Add the competition name next to COMPETITION

3 Add the date next to DATE

4 Add your handicap under the HANDICAP box (Remember to check your handicap on the Handicap Board)

5 Add strokes received under the STROKES RECEIVED box (This will be the same as your handicap)

6 Place a tick next to the colour of the tees you will be playing from

With a point system being used for scoring each hole the strokes received will need to be used to calculate the points

Each hole has a STROKE INDEX. This is a ranking on the difficulty of the hole starting from 1 up to 18. With 1 being classed as the hardest hole and 18 being classed as the easiest hole.

If you have a handicap of 18 you receive 1 shot on every hole

If you have a handicap of 10 you receive 1 shot on all the holes with a STROKE INDEX of 1 to 10

If you have a handicap of more than 18 you will receive 2 shots or sometimes 3 shots on a hole.

If handicap of 24. Take 18 from 24 and you are left with 6. You will then receive 1 shot on every hole plus an extra stroke on holes with a STROKE INDEX of 1 to 6.

The nett score for the hole will be

The number taken on the hole - The number of strokes received on that hole

Example Using Handicap of 24

Hole Stroke Index Strokes Received Score Score - Strokes Received = Nett Score Nett Score
1 13 1 6 6 - 1 5
5 1 2 5 5 - 2 3

You still write down score under A but then add the nett score under NETT SCORE

Remember to write down your own score under MARKER'S SCORE for your own reference

For every hole you need to mark score under A and nett score under NETT SCORE

Next you need to fill in the POINTS column

You compare the number in the NETT SCORE with the number in the PAR column for the hole

If the NETT SCORE and the PAR are the same it is classed as par

If the NETT SCORE is 1 lower than PAR it is classed as a birdie

If the NETT SCORE is 2 lower than PAR it is classed as an eagle

If the NETT SCORE is 3 lower than PAR it is classed as an albatross

If the NETT SCORE is 1 higher than PAR it is classed as a bogey

If the NETT SCORE is 2 higher than PAR it is classed as a double bogey

The Stableford Points System

Nett Score Points
Par 2
Birdie 3
Eagle 4
Albatross 5
Bogey 1
Double Bogey or More 0

You then write the point under POINTS column

After the 9 holes are completed you can add up the numbers under POINTS and write the answer below in line with OUT

Continue to mark in the same way for the remaining 9 holes

After final 9 holes completed add up the numbers in POINTS column and write down answer below in line with IN

Copy across the OUT points total from first 9 holes below the IN total you just wrote

Add up the IN and OUT points and write below in line with TOTAL

Write the TOTAL also in the STABLEFORD POINTS box

Check all is  correct and sign the card

If any mistakes were made by you when marking the card put your initials next to the mistake to show you made it and that the player has not altered the card after you gave the card back to him

Then get your card from whom ever marked it

Check ALL the scores on each hole is correct including nett score and points

Check that the points all add up correctly

Make sure you then sign the card next to PLAYERS SIGNATURE and that the marker has also signed the card as well

The card is now complete and can be given to the scorer
